March 8th is International Women’s Day (IWD) and we invite you to celebrate globally the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women with us. IWD is a time to reflect on progress made, to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
Since the 1900s significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups have come together through the years to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.
During 1908 Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. On February 28th, 1909 the first National Woman’s Day (NWD) was observed across the United States.
Passed by Congress June 4th, 1919, and ratified on August 18th, 1920, the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote. International Women’s Day was finally celebrated for the first time by the United Nations in 1975. Marking IWD a day to celebrate globally and make visible the achievements of women while continuing the call for accelerating gender parity.
2011 saw the 100-year centenary of International Women’s Day reflecting on “the extraordinary accomplishments of women” in shaping the country’s history. As Viola Davis said, “Do not live someone else’s life and someone else’s idea of what womanhood is. Womanhood is you.” This year, especially, practice and share the joy of self-care.
Self-care matters, here is why:
- Provides you with insight into what you need to be the best version of yourself and maintain a healthy relationship with yourself.
- Produces positive feelings and boosts your confidence and self-esteem
- Helps you cope with stress and to prioritize what’s important to you.
Ways to practice self-care:
- Make a commitment to honor and respect yourself by being willing to listen and learn from your emotions.
- Over-caring and burnout result from not including yourself on the list of people who require care. Differentiate Between Caring and Over-caring.
- Pause for moments of mindfulness and be present.
- Physically take care of yourself through daily exercise and proper hydration.
- Pamper from the outside in with a daily skincare regimen and nutrient rich diet.
A woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re so much stronger when we take care of ourselves and cheer each other on. Let’s celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about women’s equality by having the conversation, support and fundraise for female-focused charities and remember to practice self-care.
